D-Backs Lock Up Gurriel Jr. on 3-Year Deal, Designate Castillo

PHOENIX, AZ – The Arizona Diamondbacks have secured the future of their outfield by signing All-Star Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to a 3-year contract with a club option for a fourth year. To make room on the 40-man roster, the D-backs designated infielder Diego Castillo for assignment.

Gurriel, 30, enjoyed a breakout season in 2023, earning his first All-Star selection and playing a key role in Arizona’s run to the World Series. He set career highs in games played (145), runs (65), hits (144), doubles (35), home runs (24), extra-base hits (61), total bases (255) and walks (33).

“Lourdes was a revelation for us last year,” commented D-backs general manager Mike Hazen. “He’s a dynamic offensive player with a knack for making big plays in big moments, and his defense is among the best in the league. We’re thrilled to have him locked up for the foreseeable future.”

Gurriel’s offensive prowess was on display throughout the season, particularly during a hot stretch from March to May. He ranked fifth in the National League with a .311 average during that period, sixth with a .906 OPS, and seventh with a .547 slugging percentage. He continued his torrid hitting into the postseason, batting .273 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 17 games.

Defensively, Gurriel solidified his reputation as one of the league’s best outfielders. He led the D-backs with eight outfield assists and ranked fourth among NL outfielders with 14 defensive runs saved.

“Lourdes is a complete player who brings so much to this team,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “He’s a great teammate, a leader, and he makes us all better. We’re excited to see what he accomplishes in the years to come.”

Castillo, 28, saw limited action with the D-backs in 2023, appearing in just one game. He spent most of the season at Triple-A Reno, where he batted .267 with 11 home runs and 52 RBI in 124 games.
