A Haven for Healing: Project Sanctuary Secures New Home for Military Families

By Johanna-Rosalye Luna

GRANBY, CO – In a groundbreaking move that promises long-term stability and expanded services, Project Sanctuary, a non-profit dedicated to supporting military families, has secured a permanent home in the idyllic setting of Pagosa Springs, Colorado. This 42-acre retreat center nestled amidst the majestic San Juan National Forest. This marks a pivotal moment for the organization, providing a nurturing environment for military families to find healing, strength, and hope together.

“Having our own retreat center has been a cherished dream,” shares Heather Ehle, founder and CEO of Project Sanctuary. “We envision this space as a beacon of comfort and connection, a place where families can rebuild resilience, navigate challenges, and rediscover their joy.” This dream became a necessity after losing their primary summer retreat partner and facing rising costs at alternative locations. The new center signifies a bold step towards self-sufficiency and expanded capacity, allowing Project Sanctuary to serve even more families throughout the year.

The beauty of this haven extends far beyond the scenic backdrop. The property boasts a spacious Main Lodge equipped with a commercial kitchen, private bedrooms, and inviting communal spaces like a game room and a fireside lounge. A secondary Guest Lodge offers additional private rooms and a central meeting area, while duplex cabins and RV hook-up sites cater to diverse accommodation needs. The infrastructure even includes an office/storage building, a pole barn, and essential equipment for maintaining the grounds.

While renovations and additions are planned in collaboration with an architect, Project Sanctuary will still utilize partner centers in 2024 to fulfill existing commitments. The full 2024 retreat schedule remains accessible on their website, allowing families to plan ahead. However, the launch of a capital campaign in 2024 promises exciting developments, paving the way for enhanced facilities and expanded services in the future.

For over 16 years, Project Sanctuary has championed the well-being of military families. Their comprehensive retreats, offered nationwide, address relationship reconnection, communication skills, financial literacy, mental health, and overall well-being through immersive therapeutic experiences. Staffed by licensed counselors, certified recreational therapists, and culturally competent veterans. These retreats create a safe space for families to heal, learn, and grow together.

Project Sanctuary’s unwavering belief in the interconnectedness of military families is embodied in their motto: “When one person serves, the whole family serves.” Their commitment to providing the tools and resources necessary for sustained healing journeys sets them apart.
