Advocacy Youth Group to Lobby Arizona Lawmakers at State Capitol, Urging Action on Education, Licenses for Dreamers

PHOENIX, AZ – Aliento, a leading advocate for undocumented youth and mixed-status families, will host its annual Education Day (E-Day) on Wednesday.

More than 250 students, educators, and allies are set to descend on the Arizona State Capitol on Wednesday for a day of advocacy focused on education and immigration issues impacting young people. The event, dubbed “E-Day,” is a platform for undocumented youth and their supporters to share stories, advocate for key legislative priorities, and engage directly with state lawmakers.

Focus on Driver’s Licenses, Dreamer Licenses, and College Affordability

This year’s agenda highlights Aliento’s key legislative priorities:

  • Occupational and Professional Licenses for Dreamers: The group will push for legislation allowing undocumented youth with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status to obtain licenses in various professions.
  • Driver’s Licenses for All: Aliento will advocate for expanding access to driver’s licenses regardless of immigration status, citing safety and economic benefits.
  • Expanding Arizona Promise Program: The group will seek increased funding for the Arizona Promise program, which offers in-state tuition and scholarships to all Arizona students, including Dreamers, under Proposition 308 passed in 2022.

Personal Stories, Community Building, and Legislative Meetings

Education Day will feature personal stories from community members impacted by current immigration and education policies. Participants will also engage in community-building activities and practice sessions before meeting with legislators.

Aliento played a key role in the passage of Prop 308 in 2022, demonstrating the power of youth activism. E-Day aims to build on this momentum, empowering young people to take ownership of their futures and advocate for policies that benefit themselves and their communities.

When: Wednesday, January 31, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Where: Arizona State Capitol, 1700 W Washington St, Phoenix, AZ 85007
