Diamondbacks acquire Eugenio Suarez

The Diamondbacks acquire Eugenio Suarez from the Seattle Mariners. This will immediately fill their need for an everyday third baseman. The popular and well-liked player brings something the organization was looking for, a power hitting right-handed bat.

Middle of the Lineup Hitter

Suarez’s acquisition gives the Diamondbacks yet another power hitter to slot into the middle of their lineup. With Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte and Christian Walker shaping the core of their lineup, adding someone with Suárez’s track record is immense.

Mike Hazen Speaks

The Diamondbacks acquire Eugenio Suarez and General Manager Mike Hazen said, “We have been looking for an everyday third baseman.” He added, “This is a guy that adds a power element, good defender, everyday player to a position that we’ve been platooning for a few years now.” Hazen went on to say that Suarez is “an incredible clubhouse guy.” That the Diamondbacks have lost good clubhouse guys with their departed free agents. In closing Hazen mentioned, “that his addition to the payroll will not prevent the team from spending money to make other necessary moves, namely in signing a starting pitcher”.

What Suarez Brings

What Suarez brings is 10 years of MLB service and his power potential. He has averaged 30 homeruns and 90 RBIs a season in his 10-year career. Suarez has averaged 152 games played over the last three seasons. Considered a decent defensive threat at third base he will make some defensive plays. Look for him to bring his clubhouse popularity with both veterans and younger players and is known for motivating his team during losing streaks or playoff pushes.

One Snag to his Offense

There is one snag to his offensive game, however, strikeouts. In 2018, he struck out 142 times. The strikeouts were even higher in 2019, as he led the National League by striking out 189 times. Even after being traded, Suarez led the American League in both his seasons with Seattle—196 in 2022 and 214 in 2023. The 214 strikeouts in 2023 were the seventh-most ever recorded in a single season.

Final Year of Contract

The Diamondbacks acquire Eugenio Suarez who is in the final year of his contract in 2024. The Diamondbacks have a $15 million club option for 2025. He will make $11.286 million in 2024. However, if he plays well, it is possible that the Diamondbacks would offer to extend his deal.

Hopefully Reap the Benefits

Ultimately the Diamondbacks hope to reap the benefits of the trade quickly. Having Suarez in the lineup sets this team up for some serious power hitting numbers. And despite his strikeout numbers, look for Suarez to play a vital role for a team that surprised everyone to make it the 2023 World Series—and who look to repeat that feat in 2024.
