City of Phoenix reopens pre-application to Housing Choice Voucher waitlist

PHOENIX, AZ – On Tuesday, the City of Phoenix Housing Department announced that it is reopening the pre-application process for the Housing Choice Voucher (HVC) waitlist. 

The City of Phoenix is bringing back the assistance program for the first time since 2016 with the first opportunity for Phoenix residents and their families in need of assistance to join waitlist.

The HCV pre-application process with be open for 15 days, from September 12 to September 26, applications will be accepted via online or by paper (in person, by email, fax) in multiple languages. 

In a statement released by the City of Phoenix, City of Phoenix Housing Department Director, Titus Mathew stated, “The House Choice Voucher program is a necessary and valuable resource for Phoenix residents”. He added, “We are excited for the opportunity for more individuals and families to join the waitlist and have access to assistance in obtaining safe and stable affordable housing.” 

Residents who receive a voucher will be free to choose housing of their choice in the private rental market. Participants with a voucher will pay thirty-percent of the monthly income toward rent and utilities, and the program will pay the difference up to the contract rent to the landlord each month. 

During the pre-application process, all applicants will be asked to provide the following standard household information: mailing address, email, phone number, information on their household members, and total household income. Applicants will not be required ti submit social security numbers and citizenship or immigration status. There is no cost to apply for or receive a voucher. 

Applicant will be able to check the status of their application after the waitlist has been established and ensue their contact information is up to date. Once applicants have been selected for the HCV program, full program eligibility will be verified as vouchers become available and selected from the waitlist.
