PHOENIX, AZ – City of Phoenix Councilwoman, Betty Guardado, announced on Friday that she is proud to organize the “El Grito” Festival in celebration of Mexican Independence Day.
Mexican Independence Day, often referred to as ‘El Grito de Independencia,’ commemorates the historic battle cry that ignited the rebellion for independence in 1810. A statement released by the Councilwoman’s office stated “this lively event promises to bring the rich cultural heritage of Mexico to the City, creating an atmosphere of festivity, unity, and community.”
The festival will take place for a second consecutive year in Downtown Phoenix on September 15 from 4pm to 11pm. The city will embrace the spirit of Mexican Independence Day at 3rd Avenue and Adams Street. The “Grito” will take place at 9pm.
The event is free to the public and will cater to families and individual of all ages. There will be a variety of activities and attractions for the public to enjoy. There will culinary delights of authentic Mexican cuisine, live entertainment, arts & crafts, Lucha Libre (Mexican-style wrestling), and refreshments.
Councilwoman Guardado believes the “El Grito” Festival is more that a celebration, it is an opportunity to give back to the community. It brings diverse communities together in celebration of freedom, unity and joy. Proceeds from the event will benefit Phoenix Sisters Cities, an organization dedicated to fostering relationships between the people of Phoenix and it’s Sister City Hermosillo.
