PHOENIX, AZ — The Phoenix Mercury returned to the Valley to face the Chicago Sky following an extensive break from the WNBA All-Star Game and the summer Olympics.

A Billings Addition

Billings immediately made her presence felt on the court with strong offense and aggressive play, providing a crucial boost in the absence of Rebecca Allen and Charisma Osborne, both out due to injury. When asked of Billings, Phoenix Mercury coach Nate Tibbetts said that “she’s a veteran in the league who competes and defends. That’s exactly what we need from her moving forward.” “He added that the team’s focus has been strong since returning from the break, and the teams goal is to continue improving how they play.

Billing stated that “It’s been a whirlwind, but I’m excited to get to work.vWhen asked on her decision to sign with the Mercury she mentioned that she felt wanted and needed by the team. Despite minimal practice, the chemistry was there, and the transition into the game felt seamless. She is looking forward to adding the competitiveness and grit that the team needs.

Collective Victory

The game began with an aggressive tempo from both teams, with the Chicago Sky taking an early lead. Phoenix quickly responded, with Taurasi hitting a three-pointer to reclaim the lead. The crowd erupted as Taurasi collected multiple fouls, including a flagrant, but she responded like a veteran, contributing with rebounds and crucial baskets.

The Sky played aggressively, drawing fouls and sending Mercury players to the line. Despite the pressure, Phoenix kept pace in the first half.

The third quarter saw the Mercury struggle with their rhythm, appearing out of sync. However, they regained their footing late in the quarter, extending their lead to 69-50. Phoenix slowed the pace and focused on ball control, using the clock to their advantage.

In the fourth quarter, the Mercury matched the Sky’s aggressiveness, with Sutton setting the tone and Griner dominating in the paint. Billings and Cloud played key roles, contributing to the Mercury’s 86-68 victory over Chicago.

Sophie Shines

Sophie Cunningham had a standout performance, reaching a career high in rebounds and recording her first career double-double. Coach Tibbetts praised Cunningham, calling her a “spark off the bench” and highlighting her willingness to do the “dirty work” the team needs.
