PHOENIX, AZ – Phoenix Mercury’s guard, Shey Peddy, was stretched off the court after taking an elbow to the head and falling unconscious on the court during Saturday’s against Seattle Storm.
Peddy was bumped and accidentally took an elbow to the head by Seattle Storm’s Jordan Horston with 1:34 left to play in the second quarter. Peddy fell unconscious immediately after being hit, where she did not move for several minutes bringing the game to a stop and Footprint Center to a complete silence.
Mercury coaches and players surrounded Peddy coming to her aid and shielding her from fans view. Moments later, medical staff came onto the court to attend to Peddy securing her onto a stretcher and rolled off the court while she remained unconscious. Fans gave Peddy a standing ovation and cheered her on as she wad stretched off the court.
Horston was charged with a personal foul on the play, however after referee’s reviewed the play the call was overturned and Horston was charged with a flagrant foul type 1. Diana Taurasi entered the game for Peddy while Sophie Cunningham went to the line for Peddy making both baskets adding to Mercury’s lead 45-41.
Mercury gave an update during halftime stating that Peddy “has movement in her limbs” and that she was headed to the hospital for further evaluation.
Interim Head Coach, Nikki Blue provided an update on Shey Peddy’s health status stating that all test had concluded negative and was discharged from the hospital with a concussion. The team also released a statement stating “Shey was in good spirits and returned to the arena following the game. She will be evaluated tomorrow and in the coming days.”
Phoenix tried to rally after Peddy’s absence from the game for a victory falling to Seattle 91-97.
