Spanish-Only Movie Theater Opens at Desert Sky Mall

PHOENIX, AZ – A Spanish-only movie theater opens at Desert Sky Mall in Maryvale. America Cinemas will serve Latinos and Spanish speakers in the Phoenix area. They have remodeled the six theatres with larger, leather seating and new screens and sound systems. All genres of movies are offered, including those filmed in Spanish as well as those dubbed into Spanish.

How it came About

Sonora Cinemas closed their Desert Sky Mall theater in March 2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. It would never reopen. Sonora Entertainment Group declared bankruptcy and ceased operations later that year. This left a void for Spanish-speaking movie goers in the Phoenix area until August 18, 2023, when America Cinemas opened. The theater, which recently celebrated its grand opening, provides Spanish-speaking families with the ability to enjoy movies together. They even offer a family movie night once a week on Wednesdays.

Latin Experience

The theater includes the same services as any other—the only difference is the Latino touch. The experience will be entirely in Spanish. Customers will be welcomed by and intermingle with a Spanish-speaking staff. The cinema features Latin music and Latin- “flavored” concessions before entering a theater to watch a movie filmed in or dubbed into Spanish.

Concessions counters offer the same items you see at other theaters—popcorn, soft drinks, nachos, hot dogs—but with the addition of Latino touches like jalapeños, Valentina sauce, etc. As far as the sweet tooth items, there are classic Mexican sweets like the frozen treat Paleta, the hazel nut-flavored Duvalín, and the chili-spiced Pulparindo among the other favorites.

Ticket Purchase and Prices

You will be able to purchase tickets through the website or the phone app, both of which allow for advanced purchase, or directly at the box office—all completely in Spanish. Adult tickets start at $11.50 with Matinee showings priced at $8.00. Tickets for children are $7.00. There are discounted tickets for 65 and over and Service Member tickets, at $8.00. They even have a family day on Wednesdays with all screenings priced at $7.00.

They will offer a rewards program for everyone, which can be especially good for families. Customers can accumulate points and cash them in for discounts, free items, and gift cards.

Purpose

A Spanish-only movie theater opens at Desert Sky Mall. America Cinemas’ purpose in coming to Phoenix is to bring the movie-going theater experience to Latin Spanish speakers; living in the greater Phoenix area who do not usually have this opportunity. Yes, other theaters provide programs in Spanish, but it is usually when they decide to do so rather than it being a regular event. America Cinemas’ programming is all Spanish all the time and they intend to screen all major premiers—as demonstrated by the slate of movies currently showing in their theaters.

And it is not just for the Latin community. Anyone who enjoys entertainment in Spanish and wants an immersive Spanish experience—good for students and others learning the language—will find it at the theater.
