The Phoenix Mercury and veteran forward DeWanna Bonner have reached a contract buyout, the team announced Monday, allowing the two-time WNBA champion to pursue another opportunity ahead of the postseason.
“DeWanna has been an important part of our team and brought tremendous leadership, experience and competitiveness to the Mercury,” general manager Nick U’Ren said. “We worked out a buyout agreement that gives her the opportunity to chase a title in what could be her final postseason.”
Bonner, 38, returned to Phoenix in 2024 and spent the past two seasons with the Mercury. She said she was grateful for the opportunity to return to Phoenix and compete in front of the team’s fans.
“At this stage of my career, I don’t know what the future holds, but I’m grateful to the Mercury for giving me the opportunity to play in what could be one of my final postseason opportunities,” Bonner said.
Bonner spent 12 seasons with the Mercury, appearing in 396 games and averaging 13.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals.
She helped Phoenix win WNBA championships in 2009 and 2014 and earned three consecutive Sixth Woman of the Year awards from 2009-11. She was also a three-time All-Star with the Mercury in 2015, 2018 and 2019.
This season, Bonner became the third player in WNBA history to reach 8,000 career points. She also moved into second place on the league’s all-time games played list and became the winningest player in WNBA history with 379 regular-season and postseason victories.
