PHOENIX — The Phoenix Mercury overcame a sluggish start and used a dominant second-half performance to defeat the Seattle Storm 93-73 on Pride Day Saturday.
Phoenix and Seattle traded baskets throughout a tightly contested opening quarter. The Mercury took an early 10-9 lead following a basket by Lexi Held, while Alyssa Thomas added a layup to keep Phoenix within striking distance. However, turnovers proved costly for the Mercury early, committing five first-quarter turnovers that led to nine Seattle points.
The Storm capitalized on Phoenix’s offensive miscues and defensive lapses to close the first quarter with a 24-19 advantage.
The Mercury responded in the second quarter by regrouping on both ends of the floor. Behind contributions from DeWanna Bonner and improved execution offensively, Phoenix regained the lead and built momentum heading into halftime.
Phoenix benefited from drawing fouls and converting at the free-throw line, helping fuel a strong second-quarter surge. The Mercury entered halftime with a 48-41 lead.
The third quarter belonged entirely to Phoenix.
The Mercury opened the second half with a 14-0 run, extending their lead to 62-41 and seizing complete control of the game. Phoenix found its rhythm offensively while forcing Seattle into costly turnovers, turning defense into scoring opportunities.
Strong ball movement and team chemistry highlighted the quarter as the Mercury outscored the Storm 33-20 and carried an 81-61 advantage into the final period.
Phoenix led by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter, receiving significant production from its bench, which contributed 31 points. Kahleah Copper paced the Mercury with 17 points, while Noemi Brochant added 16 points and Valériane Ayayi provided a key spark during the team’s second-half run.
Despite late-game fatigue and turnover issues, the Mercury limited Seattle’s offensive production and maintained a comfortable lead throughout the fourth quarter.
Natasha Mack recorded her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Six Mercury players scored in double figures as Phoenix secured the 20-point victory.
The win marked an important response for the Mercury, who emphasized teamwork and execution throughout the contest.
Following the game, head coach Nate Tibbetts credited the team’s recent work in practice for the turnaround.
“We’ve been focusing on growth over the last couple of weeks, and it showed in the second and third quarters,” Tibbetts said. “Our ability to create challenges for Seattle on both ends of the floor was a big key.”
Tibbetts also highlighted the impact of Alyssa Thomas, especially with roster adjustments forced by injuries.
Tibbetts acknowledged that Alyssa Thomas is a pillar for the Mercury’s defense, stating that her versatility allows her to see the floor, move the ball and create opportunities for her teammates.
He added that the group has remained focused and committed despite adversity.
Brochant said the team understood the importance of securing the victory.
“We knew we needed this win,” she said.
Ayayi echoed that sentiment, emphasizing patience and trust in her role.
“It feels good to get the win tonight,” Ayayi said. “I needed to stay patient, I know what I can bring to the team.”
With the victory, the Mercury celebrated Pride Night with one of their most complete performances of the season, defeating the Storm 93-73 before the home crowd.
