Eduardo Rodríguez delivered another strong outing on the mound, while Jordan Lawlar powered Arizona’s offense as the Diamondbacks shut out the Cincinnati Reds 9-0.
Rodríguez tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out four. He threw 99 pitches, including 63 strikes, and lowered his ERA to 2.61. The outing earned Rodríguez his 13th win of the season, improving his record to 13-4.
Rodríguez entered Friday’s game coming off back-to-back quality starts, carrying a 2.77 ERA with 14 strikeouts and just two walks over that stretch.
Dennis Santana replaced Rodríguez in the sixth inning, with Rodríguez finishing just one pitch shy of reaching 100 pitches.
Lawlar provided the early offensive spark in the second inning, launching a two-run home run to left field to extend Arizona’s lead to 3-0. He continued to produce throughout the night, adding a single in the third inning and an RBI single in the seventh to give the D-backs a 7-0 advantage.
Arizona opened the scoring in the first inning when Gabriel Moreno drove in Corbin Carroll with an RBI single.
The D-backs added three runs in the second. After Tim Tawa singled and stole second, Lawlar launched his home run. José Fernández followed with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Ildemaro Vargas’ sacrifice fly.
In the third, Lawlar reached on a single before Fernández walked. Waaldschmidt followed with a double that scored Lawlar and moved Fernández to third, extending Arizona’s lead to 5-0.
Carroll doubled in the fourth inning and later scored on a Geraldo Perdomo single, giving the D-backs a 6-0 lead.
Arizona added another run in the seventh when Lawlar singled home Perdomo. The D-backs put the game away in the eighth. Perdomo doubled before Arenado singled him home, and Tawa followed with a double to deep center that scored Arenado for the final run of the night.
Carroll Makes History
Carroll also made history on his 26th birthday Friday, becoming just the second player in major league history to record at least 100 home runs, 100 stolen bases and 50 triples before turning 26.
The birthday celebration came during a special weekend at Chase Field, with the D-backs celebrating Hispanic Heritage Weekend and highlighting the Puerto Rican and Dominican communities.
Moreno Strikes Again
Moreno also extended his home on-base streak to 30 games, the third-longest single-season streak in franchise history. Steve Finley holds the second-longest streak at 31 games in 2000, while Stephen Drew owns the club record with 38 games in 2009.
A Suarez Return
The game also marked Eugenio Suárez’s return to the Valley. Suárez received a warm welcome from D-backs fans when he stepped to the plate in the second inning, making his first appearance in Phoenix since July 2025.
Reds Struggle
Reds starting pitcher Nick Lodolo struggled against Arizona’s offense, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits over 3 1/3 innings. He struck out two and walked two, falling to 3-3 on the season.
The Reds also lost Michael Toglia, who suffered a right shoulder dislocation after diving for a line drive hit by Perdomo.
Arizona entered the night fourth in the National League wild-card race, one game behind the San Diego Padres, three games behind the Philadelphia Phillies and seven games behind the Chicago Cubs.
The D-backs improved to 2-0 against the Reds in the current series after winning two of three games during their June matchup.
Hispanic Heritage Weekend
The D-backs will continue Hispanic Heritage Weekend at Chase Field on Saturday with a celebration of Puerto Rican heritage before Sunday’s festivities highlight Dominican heritage.
Fans will have access to specialty food items throughout the ballpark, along with performances by Miguel “Mambo” De Leon and Orgullo Boricua AZ.
Sunday’s special-event ticket package will include a Dominican Republic-inspired hat. Stadium festivities also will feature dance lessons in La Terraza and a performance by Stilo Dance Company.
Before Sunday’s game, the team will recognize Dominican community leaders Caroline Torres and Vanessa Garcia.
