Mercury Fall to Sparks on 30th Anniversary Celebration

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Mercury celebrated 30 years of women’s professional basketball Thursday night at Mortgage Matchup Center, but the milestone occasion ended in disappointment as the Los Angeles Sparks secured a 97-88 victory.

The Mercury struggled to find offensive consistency from the opening tip, while the Sparks established control early and carried momentum throughout the game. Los Angeles’ defensive pressure disrupted Phoenix on both ends of the floor and limited the Mercury’s ability to generate sustained scoring runs.

The Sparks led by as many as 21 points and maintained control for much of the contest. Despite strong production in the paint and valuable contributions from the Mercury bench, Phoenix was unable to mount a comeback.

Defensive breakdowns and perimeter coverage issues continued to be a challenge for the Mercury, allowing Los Angeles to capitalize from beyond the arc and maintain its advantage.

Following the game, head coach Nate Tibbetts pointed to the team’s defensive struggles as a primary concern.

“People have been comfortable,” Tibbetts said. “We’re not doing a good enough job getting to their shooters. The 3s are a problem right now.”

Tibbetts also emphasized the need for greater physicality and accountability across the roster.

“Everyone has to step up,” Tibbetts said. “We have a lot of new players, and if we don’t improve, we’re going to get burned. We did not play well at home, which is disappointing. We have to get better.”

The Mercury coach acknowledged that the team is still working to establish chemistry, discipline and consistency on both ends of the floor.

“You have a standard, and we’re not there yet,” Tibbetts said. “We’re going to find a group that competes. We’re just not there yet.”

Tibbetts added that offensive rhythm remains a work in progress as players continue adjusting to one another and learning the system.

Alyssa Thomas and Jovana Nogic echoed the importance of defensive accountability after the loss.

“Defense is a choice,” Thomas said. “Teams are getting into the paint too easily. If you don’t defend, you’re not going to play.”

Thomas emphasized that strong defense requires attention to detail and a collective commitment from the entire roster.

With a challenging road trip ahead, the Mercury plan to review film, make adjustments and continue building toward the standard they expect.

“It’s going to be a tough road trip,” Thomas said.

Phoenix will look to regroup and bounce back as the season continues following the 97-88 defeat as they go on to face the Atlanta Dream Sunday, June 24th. ♦︎
