PHOENIX — Corbin Carroll tied a franchise record with his 52nd career triple and drove in three runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks erased an early deficit to defeat the Minnesota Twins 9-5 Friday night at Chase Field.
Arizona improved its season total to 26 comeback victories, they have won or split five of its last six home series.
The Diamondbacks used eight pitchers and overcame an early 3-1 deficit before breaking the game open with a four-run fifth inning and Carroll’s bases-clearing triple in the eighth.
Soroka Exits Early With Hip Discomfort
Arizona’s pitching plans changed early when starter Michael Soroka exited the game after one inning pitched because of posterior left hip discomfort.
Taylor Clarke entered in relief before Ryan Thompson took over and worked into the third inning.
Twins Build Early Lead
Minnesota extended its advantage in the third inning after Kody Clemens reached on a fielding error and later scored.
The Twins added another run in the fourth when Tristan Gray singled to center field, scoring Caratini for a 3-1 lead.
Arizona’s offense struggled early but began showing signs of life in the third. LuJames Groover delivered a double and later scored when Geraldo Perdomo walked and Carroll followed with a single to left field.
Diamondbacks Erupt in Fifth
The game turned in the bottom of the fifth.
After Gabriel Moreno reached on a fielding error that scored Perdomo, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. brought home Carroll to tie the game at 3-3.
Moments later, Nolan Arenado singled and Ildemaro Vargas lined a two-run single to left field, scoring Gurriel and Arenado to give Arizona a 5-3 lead.
The Diamondbacks never trailed again.
Bullpen Holds Before Carroll Delivers
Jonathan Loáisiga provided a key bridge outing, retiring all three batters he faced in the sixth inning. Brandyn Garcia followed with a scoreless seventh.
Ketel Marte added insurance in the sixth with a solo home run that pushed Arizona’s lead to 6-3.
Minnesota made things interesting in the eighth when Josh Bell and Royce Lewis hit back-to-back solo home runs off Kevin Ginkel, trimming the deficit to 6-5.
Ginkel recovered by striking out Tristan Gray and benefited from a caught stealing by Kyler Fedko to end the threat.
Carroll Matches Franchise Mark
Arizona delivered the knockout blow in the bottom of the eighth.
Jordan Lawlar and Pavin Smith opened the inning with singles before Perdomo drew a walk to load the bases.
Carroll then ripped a triple to right field, clearing the bases and extending Arizona’s lead to 9-5.
The three-run triple was Carroll’s 52nd career triple, tying Stephen Drew for the most triples in Diamondbacks franchise history.
Carroll finished the night with multiple hits, scored a run and drove in four runs while continuing his standout season.
Pitching Rotation Questions Moving Forward
Soroka’s early exit adds another question mark to Arizona’s pitching rotation as the club evaluates the severity of his hip issue.
Manager Torey Lovullo was forced to use eight pitchers Friday, including Thompson, Jameson, Loáisiga, Garcia, Ginkel and Paul Sewald, who recorded the final three outs.
The bullpen responded effectively, limiting Minnesota’s offense after the fourth inning and preserving Arizona’s comeback win.
