Mercury hold off Sky 91-83 behind Thomas, Nogić performances

By Johanna Rosalye Luna

PHOENIX – The Phoenix Mercury defeated the Chicago Sky 91-83 on Friday night at Mortgage Matchup Center, overcoming a late fourth-quarter surge behind standout performances from Alyssa Thomas and Jovana Nogić.

Phoenix controlled much of the game early with aggressive defensive pressure and efficient ball movement, building momentum through the first half. The Sky responded in the fourth quarter, cutting into the Mercury’s lead and forcing Phoenix to execute down the stretch in what became a physical, back-and-forth finish.

Thomas once again anchored the Mercury on both ends of the floor, contributing as a scorer, facilitator and defensive presence. Nogić provided a spark offensively with timely shooting and key possessions that helped Phoenix maintain control late in the game.

Following the win, Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts praised his team’s resilience and composure.

“We fought hard, played a really good first half,” Tibbetts said. “We stayed together and kept fighting.”

Tibbetts also emphasized the team’s developing identity early in the season.

“Identity is defense and toughness,” he said. “Offense is going to evolve as they get players back. Tonight was a really good step.”

The Mercury’s defensive intensity proved pivotal throughout the night, forcing difficult possessions for Chicago while capitalizing on transition opportunities offensively. Phoenix continues to build chemistry as the roster adjusts and players return to full health. ♦︎
