Marte Powers D-backs Past Rockies on Serpientes Jersey Night

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks edged the Colorado Rockies 5-4 on Saturday night at Chase Field behind a big performance from Ketel Marte and timely offense during Serpientes Jersey Night in front of a crowd of 33,891.

Arizona struck first in the bottom of the third inning when Geraldo Perdomo delivered an RBI single to left field to score the game’s opening run. Moments later, Nolan Arenado ripped a double to left field, bringing home two more runs to give the Diamondbacks a 3-0 advantage.

Colorado responded quickly in the fourth inning, plating two runs to cut Arizona’s lead to 3-2.

The Diamondbacks answered again in the fifth when Ketel Marte launched a two-run home run to right field, extending Arizona’s lead to 5-2. Marte finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, extending his hitting streak to seven games. Entering Saturday, Marte had totaled three doubles, two home runs, seven RBIs, three walks and no strikeouts during the streak.

The Rockies continued to battle back, adding a run in the sixth inning and another in the eighth to narrow the deficit to 5-4, but Arizona’s bullpen held firm late.

Zac Gallen earned the win after pitching five innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out six. The right-hander threw 82 pitches, including 52 strikes, and improved to 3-4 on the season. Relievers Brandon Pfaadt and Kevin Ginkel followed in relief before Paul Sewald closed out the ninth inning with a clean 1-2-3 frame to earn the save.

Colorado starter Michael Lorenzen was charged with the loss.

The Diamondbacks left nine runners on base, while the Rockies stranded seven.

Arizona has now won seven of its last nine games and is 10-4 since May 9, holding the National League’s second-most wins during that span. The club has also won three of its last four series against the Mets, Rangers, Rockies and Giants.

The Rockies and Diamondbacks will close out the series Sunday afternoon at Chase Field. Arizona is expected to start Ryne Nelson, while Colorado is scheduled to send José Quintana to the mound. First pitch is set for 1:10 p.m. ♦︎
